The World Health Organization said Wednesday that it would construct a worldwide biomanufacturing training centre in South Korea to help developing countries in generating their own vaccines, insulin, and cancer treatments.

The action follows the UN health agency’s participation in the establishment of a global mRNA vaccine technology transfer centre in South Africa last year to benefit African countries who are mostly excluded from access to Covid vaccines.

That hub’s goal is to assist manufacturers in Africa and abroad with the know-how necessary to produce mRNA vaccines, such as those used against Covid-19, on a large scale and in accordance with international standards.

Meanwhile, the new South Korean centre will house trainees from middle- and low-income countries throughout the globe who may have previously faced barriers to accessing vaccines and treatments developed primarily in wealthier countries.

It will give technical and hands-on training on the manufacturing practises required to manufacture such vaccines, as well as other medical supplies such as insulin and monoclonal antibodies, the WHO said in a statement.

One of the key barriers to successful technology transfer in low- and middle-income countries is the lack of a skilled workforce and weak regulatory systems,“ said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Building those skills will ensure that they can manufacture the health products they need at a good quality standard so that they no longer have to wait at the end of the queue,“ he said in a statement.

According to the WHO, the South Korean government supplied a big facility outside of Seoul that is already providing biomanufacturing training to South Korean companies.

It said that the WHO Academy will collaborate with the South Korean ministry of health and welfare to create a comprehensive curriculum on biomanufacturing in general.

Additionally, the UN health agency stated Wednesday that the South African mRNA centre will give assistance to five other countries: Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, Serbia, and Vietnam.

The news follows earlier this month’s selection of six African nations to begin their own mRNA vaccine manufacturing with backing from the centre.

According to the WHO, a number of nations have shown an interest in joining in the initiative.

It said that the South African centre will assist all responses, “but is currently prioritising countries that do not have mRNA technology but already have some biomanufacturing infrastructure and capacity.” – AFP
