The US Cuts Short The Initial Quarantine Period To Avoid Labour Shortages

Health officials in the United States reduced the recommended isolation period for individuals with asymptomatic Covid-19 yesterday, as President Joe Biden urged Americans not to panic in the face of an outbreak that threatens widespread societal uproar.

Biden warned that although certain US hospitals may be “overrun" by the quickly spreading Omicron variant, the US is generally well equipped to deal with the new spike.

Yesterday, the coronavirus proceeded to trample on airlines’ hectic Christmas holiday schedules, with many airlines reporting labour shortages due to an increase in cases of the Omicron variant.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention’s suggestions – which reduce the duration of isolation for asymptomatic cases from ten to five days – pave the door for individuals to return to work sooner, reducing the likelihood of major labour shortages in essential sectors of the economy.

The guidelines, which are not legally enforceable but are carefully followed by US corporations and officials, also propose that the five-day isolation period be “followed by five days of wearing a mask when around others.

The FDA said that the revised rules were “motivated by science," since it had been shown that the majority of Covid-19 transmission occurs early in the course of illness, often one to two days before the start of showing signs and two to three days afterwards.

Biden highlighted at a White House-hosted video discussion with several state governors and health care advisors that the Omicron variant will not have the same effect as the first Covid-19 pandemic last year or the Delta spike this year.

Omicron is a source of concern, but it should not be a source of panic," he said.

Testing is more readily accessible, and mass vaccines ensure that many individuals do not get severe sickness from the infections.

‘More Work To Do’

With Omicron currently the prevalent variant in the country, more than 200,000 daily cases have been reported over the previous two days, swiftly surpassing January records.

Biden recognised that increasing testing capacity is “clearly not enough.

Seeing how tough it was for some folks to get a test this weekend shows that we have more work to do," he said.

Along with increasing free testing locations, Biden said the government would soon ship 500 million at-home test kits to Americans.

But “if we’d known, we would have gone harder, quicker," Biden said. “We have to do more.

The United States had the highest national pandemic toll globally, with over 816,000 confirmed Covid-19 fatalities and 52 million cases.

International comparisons are distorted by disparities in the accuracy of governments’ reporting methods, whereas the US mortality rate ranks lower on a per capita basis.

Pandemic Politics

The US response has been hampered by significant political opposition to vaccinations produced at rapid speed last year.

Numerous Republicans, in particular, are opposing the Biden administration’s attempt to push major businesses to take the doses.

Additionally, there has been a reluctance to get booster doses, again mostly among Republicans.

New York is one of the most pro-vaccine states, with some of the strictest mandates in the country taking effect yesterday.

The restrictions, which were enacted by departing Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio, mandate vaccinations for all private sector workers.

Anyone aged 12 and above must also provide proof of complete vaccination in order to dine at indoor restaurants or visit other public facilities, such as gyms and movie theatres.

Children from five to eleven years will be required to produce verification of receiving one vaccination dose.

According to De Blasio, it was a “historic day for New York City."

Despite citywide measures, electronics giant Apple prohibited pick-up only services at its New York locations during the virus wave, effectively sealing its doors to browsers.

Regarding further regulations, chief White House medical adviser Anthony Fauci stated that a vaccination requirement for domestic aviation travel may be essential.

I think that’s something that seriously should be considered,” he said.
