Due to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) intends to introduce a fourth dose of COVID-19 vaccination to at-risk and vulnerable groups.

Adults 60 years old and above, patients suffering chronic diseases, medical personnel as well as frontliners could receive a fourth dose to maintain their immunity,” Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang said. 

He said BMA would notify the public on the fourth shot when the rollout is authorised.

To combat the Omicron variant, Israel said that it would immediately begin administering the fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccination to adults aged 60 and older, medical personnel, and those with impaired immune systems.

Meanwhile, Yong Poovorawan, a virology researcher at Chulalongkorn University, expressed fear that Omicron cases would spread further in Thailand after the New Year holidays.

Hence, people should strictly adhere to measures to contain the spread of the virus,” he said. 

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Health has outlined preparations to address a possible COVID-19 outbreak next year triggered by the Omicron variant.

Thailand reported 2,437 new COVID-19 cases and 18 deaths in the previous 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 2,212,407 cases and 21,598 deaths.
