Sarawakians Are Prohibited From Celebrating New Year’s Eve Due To COVID
Sarawakians, particularly those living in longhouses, are reminded that they are restricted from celebrating tonight and on New Year’s Day.
Police have issued warnings to longhouse leaders prohibiting parties, eating, and drinking on New Year’s Eve.
Tega Bilong, Kanowit district police chief, said the State Disaster Management Committee’s (SDMC) prohibition encompasses all sorts of New Year’s countdowns and festivities.

“Police want to remind longhouse folk that the ban is not only applicable in cities and towns, but also to rural settlements.”
“There must be no gatherings of any kind, as a precaution against the spread of Covid-19,” he said in a statement.
Sarawak issued a blanket ban on public New Year’s Eve festivities statewide on Tuesday.
Additionally, operators of entertainment establishments are barred from organising countdown activities.
“Entertainment and business outlets cannot operate beyond midnight and no New Year’s Eve parties are allowed. Any premises found violating this ban will be penalised,” said SDMC.
