PM To Announce Borders Reopening Soon

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has told Malaysians in Cambodia that the country’s borders would soon be reopened to facilitate travel, particularly for those who live abroad.

He said that the Omicron variant has slowed the country’s progress toward the endemic stage, ultimately delaying the process of reopening the borders.

We almost announced that Malaysia has entered the endemic stage but in December 2021 the Omicron variant, a super spreader, was detected.

However, Omicron is not as bad as Delta. It spreads quickly but is not as dangerous as Delta,” he said.

Additionally, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah, International and Trade Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, Malaysian Ambassador to Cambodia Eldeen Husaini Mohd Hashim, and Senior Minister of the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Othsman Hassan represented the Cambodian government.

Othsman is also in charge of Cambodia’s Islamic Affairs.

Malaysians, Ismail Sabri said, will ultimately have to learn to live with Covid-19.

We have to accept it as any other disease such as dengue,” he said.

Malaysia’s Covid-19 cases have now surpassed 27,000 per day.

However, the majority of cases are classified as Category 1 or 2, due to the country’s high vaccination rate.

I know a lot of you are eager to come back home. I understand some of you have not gone back home for almost two years.

So we will start opening our borders to the whole world soon and you can return to Malaysia,” added Ismail Sabri.

There are around 5,000 Malaysians in Cambodia, with 2,000 residing in Phnom Penh.

Ismail Sabri said that restoring the country’s borders was critical since many had been impacted by the pandemic’s closure, particularly those in the tourism sector.

As such, we will reopen it. Restrictions on people’s movement have a huge impact on everyone,” he added.

Meanwhile, Ismail Sabri joined an official welcoming ceremony yesterday at the Peace Palace, which also serves as the office of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen. His visit was at the request of his Cambodian counterpart.

Negaraku and Cambodia’s national hymn Nokor Reach were played immediately upon his arrival at the Peace Palace, before Ismail Sabri was escorted by Hun Sen to review a guard of honour.

Ismail Sabri had previously visited the Cambodia Independence Monument and laid a wreath, followed by a similar ceremony at the Preah Borom Ratanak Kaudh Monument, which was established in memory of the late King Norodom Sihanouk.

The two presidents conducted a four-eyed meeting to discuss bilateral relations, regional concerns, and international collaboration.

Ismail Sabri subsequently met with King Norodom Sihamoni in the Royal Palace, prior to his departure for Bangkok.

Cambodia, which will host Asean 2022, is Ismail Sabri’s fourth visit to South-East Asia since he was sworn in as Malaysia’s ninth prime minister on Aug 21 last year.

65 years ago, Putrajaya and Phnom Penh full diplomatic relations.

Previously, Ismail Sabri visited Indonesia, Singapore, and Brunei.
