Shortness of breath can be caused by a lot of factors, and therapy varies depending on the reason. In many cases, the only approach to address shortness of breath is to dial 911 or transport the person to a doctor or emergency clinic. In addition to determining what is causing the victim’s shortness of breath, healthcare practitioners will be able to offer supplementary oxygen to assist the victim to breathe better.

Treatment for shortness of breath

However, there are certain first aid measures you can take to treat shortness of breath, at least until an ambulance comes or you are able to get the person to a hospital. Try the following actions if you suffer from shortness of breath:

Allow the victim to recover

The more energy you spend, the more oxygen you use, and the shorter your breath seem. Consider a solid exercise in the gym. If you work out hard enough, you will get out of breath. What is the solution? Take a breather. Are you unsure whether the victim is experiencing difficulty breathing? Take a look at the shortness of breath symptoms.

Let the victim sit, stand, or sleep in any position he or she finds most comfortable

Coaches may instruct athletes to raise their arms over their heads in order to increase chest expansion. The “tripod posture" is used by paramedics, which consists of sitting on the edge of a chair or bed and leaning forward, supported up with hands or elbows on knees. Because everyone is different, let the victim select which position is most comfortable for them.

Dial 999

If relaxing in a comfortable posture doesn’t work after two or three minutes, contact 999. Make the best decision you can. If you feel the victim is suffering from acute shortness of breath, call 999 immediately.

Make use of oxygen

If the victim has access to oxygen, this is what it’s for. If the person has persistent lung difficulties, their doctor may have warned them that using too much oxygen for too long might exacerbate their condition. During bouts of shortness of breath, the victim should utilise oxygen as prescribed by a doctor.

Treat the underlying cause of your shortness of breath

Shortness of breath can be caused by a variety of factors, many of which are curable. Asthmatic patients, for example, may have a number of tools and medications at their fingertips to treat abrupt shortness of breath. Patients suffering from lung infections may need to consult a doctor for treatment. People suffering from a heart attack may need the assistance of an ambulance.

Remember

There are several reasons for shortness of breath, some of which are fairly significant. In the worst-case scenario, shortness of breath is caused by a heart attack, a sudden lung disease, or life-threatening poisoning, in which case dialling 911 might bring the difference between life and death.
