Omicron Cases Skyrockets Over 50% In One Day In UK

An additional 86 cases of the COVID Omicron variant were confirmed in the United Kingdom on Sunday, bringing the total to 246, British health officials revealed.

This compared to 160 on Saturday, an almost 50% rise, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

According to official numbers released on Sunday, Britain recorded 43,992 new COVID-19 cases, raising the total amount of coronavirus cases in the nation to 10,464,389 cases.

Additionally, the government reported 54 new coronavirus-related fatalities. Coronavirus-related fatalities in the United Kingdom today total 145,605. These numbers only include lives lost of people who died within 28 days of their first positive test.

The newest information comes as British Health Secretary Sajid Javid said that from Tuesday, all overseas travellers to the United Kingdom, including children over the age of 12, would be required to undergo a pre-departure test. They must be taken no later than 48 hours before travel, he stressed.

Also, starting at 0400 GMT on Monday, December 6, Nigeria will be put on the red travel list. It joins seven southern African countries that were added to the list after the finding of the Omicron variant late last month.

I think it’s too late to make a material difference to the course of the Omicron wave if we’re going to have one," Xinhua quoted professor Mark Woolhouse when asked about the new travel rules.

According to the latest figures, more than 88 percent of individuals aged 12 and older in the United Kingdom have received their first dose of vaccination and about 81 percent have received both doses. Over 35% received booster vaccinations, or the third dose of a coronavirus vaccination.

To restore normalcy, countries like the United Kingdom, China, Germany, Russia, and the United States have been racing against the clock to provide coronavirus vaccines.
