Nearly 20000 Patients Affected With Long Covid In Malaysia

Almost 20,000 individuals in Malaysia who recovered from the coronavirus have been diagnosed with post-Covid-19 syndrome, also known as “long Covid," according to Deputy Health Minister Noor Azmi Ghazali.

“As of November this year, there are a total of 19,890 Covid-19 patients who were given appointments for follow-up treatment at health facilities," Dr Noor Azmi said in a statement.

According to the research, patients with post-Covid-19 syndrome display five primary symptoms: fatigue (78.9 percent), breathing difficulties when doing certain tasks (52.9 percent), coughing (18.1 percent), insomnia (14.5 percent), and anxiety (10.4 per cent).

He said that patients with long Covid often exhibit symptoms four to twelve weeks after recovery, with some patients continuing to experience symptoms beyond 12 weeks.

He said that patients with long Covid symptoms would be referred to specialists for follow-up care.

Dr Noor Azmi said that the follow-up therapy is based on the ministry's post-Covid-19 management strategy, which aims to ensure that patients suffering from long Covid receive treatment and medication.

Apart from Sungai Buloh Hospital and UiTM Training Hospital, he said, long Covid patients have been sent to 41 public and private health institutions for treatment.

Dr Noor Azmi responded to a query from Pakatan Harapan (PH) member Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad that there was no particular evidence on the effects of long Covid on children at the time.

Dr Dzulkefly noted that research conducted in other countries indicate that one in every seven children infected with Covid-19 suffers from cognitive deficits.

Dr Noor Azmi said that the treatment offered to long Covid patients treats a range of health issues, including physical symptoms such as cardiovascular and respiratory issues, as well as neurological and mental health issues.

Dr Noor Azmi said, in response to a separate question posed by PH assemblyman R.S.N Rayer, that follow-up testing on Malaysia's first Omicron variant case had come back negative.

He said that testing on five close contacts likewise came out negative.

He said that the individuals had been subjected to strict quarantine prior to being released after the negative tests.

The first Omicron infection in Malaysia was detected in a 19-year-old South African private university student in Ipoh who travelled through Singapore on Nov 19.
