On New Year’s Eve, the annual midnight “buang sial" (cleaning) dip among Sabahans would be prohibited due to the ongoing fears about the Covid-19 pandemic.

Datuk Noorliza Awang Alip, Mayor of Kota Kinabalu City, said that city hall will close all of its public beach parks – Tanjung Aru 1 and Likas Bay – from 1pm on Dec 31 (Friday) until 6am on Jan 1.

The decision is in line with the efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19,” she said today.

Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, spokesman for Sabah Covid-19, asked citizens to respect all “dos and don’ts" under Phase Four of the National Recovery Plan (NRP).

But I really hope everyone will consider celebrating New Year’s Eve with just the family at home.

Avoid crowded places," he advised as Phase Four permitted practically all business and social activities while requiring the public to adhere to standard operating procedures (SOP) rigorously.

Thousands of people traditionally assemble on the eve of New Year at the famous Tanjung Aru and Likas Bay beaches for picnics before taking a ceremonial bath at the stroke of midnight to “wash away bad omens of the passing year”.

Similar practises are also carried out along the state’s rivers.

Meanwhile, Masidi said that the number of daily new cases increased to above 200 after a week of stability in the state.

According to him, a total of 226 cases were reported Thursday, up from 197 new cases reported the previous day.

The city took the lead with 46 new cases, followed by Tuaran (37), Penampang (18), Tawau (15), Kota Belud (14), and Keningau (13) districts, with each reporting 12 cases.

He said that no new clusters had been reported.
