According to the ministry of science, technology, and innovation, no cases of the Omicron Covid-19 variant have been identified in Malaysia so far.

Minister Dr Adham Baba said that this was verified after seven labs, including the Malaysian Genome and Vaccine Institute, sequenced samples (MGVI).

“As of yesterday, a total of 5,651 samples had been analysed and 3,885 samples were identified as of the Delta-type variant while two samples were identified as of the subvariant AY4.2 which was detected last month,” he told reporters yesterday.

He said, however, that the ministry will continue to sequence samples’ genomes in order to monitor the emergence of any new variants in the country.

Additionally, he said that MGVI will sequence the genomes of those who tested positive for Covid-19 at the country’s international border checkpoints.
