Israel will become the first country to administer a fourth vaccine shot – often referred to as a second booster – to adults over the age of 60, those with impaired immune systems, and medical personnel, an expert panel advised last week.

Israel Will Soon Administer Fourth COVID Vaccine Dose

On Monday, an Israeli hospital administered the fourth COVID-19 vaccine shot to a test group, as the nation considers authorising the treatment for susceptible populations in an effort to keep up with the Omicron variant’s infection rise.

The Sheba Medical Centre study in Ramat Gan outside Tel Aviv “will zero in on efficacy of the vaccine in producing antibodies, and safety, in order to ascertain if a fourth vaccine is needed in general," a spokesman said. The 150 subjects are all medical staff.

The suggestion was supported by the Israeli government, which has been grappling with a plateau in vaccine enrollment.

However, the fourth injection is subject to final clearance by the ministry’s director-general, Nachman Ash, a medical doctor whose decision will be made independently from government influence, authorities said.

Concerned about a lack of test data, Ash may change the eligibility requirements, increasing the age requirement to 70 and removing medical personnel from the roster, Israeli press said.

The Health Ministry has made no such confirmation or denial, nor has it said when Ash’s decision is expected.

According to ministry data, 63% of Israel’s 9.4 million people has received the first two vaccination doses. Almost 45% have received a third dose. Nearly 2,000 Omicron cases have been confirmed or suspected.

Israel was the first country to distribute initial vaccines a year ago. It was one of the first to notice that protection declined over time, prompting the implementation of a broad booster programme.
