Israel Starts Administering Second COVID Booster Dose To Elderly
Israel is expanding its distribution of a fourth COVID-19 vaccination dose to senior residents of care homes, Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz said on Friday, noting their high exposure to and sensitivity to infections.
Nachman Ash, the Health Ministry’s director-general, authorised fourth doses for patients with low immune systems on Thursday, and the vaccinations started being administered on Friday.

On Monday, an Israeli hospital delivered fourth doses to a test group of healthcare professionals. The hospital described it as the first extensive investigation examining whether the second round of boosters may help combat the Omicron coronavirus variant.
Within two weeks, results are anticipated.
Last week, a panel of Health Ministry experts suggested that Israel deliver a fourth dose of the vaccine produced by Pfizer (PFE.N) and BioNTech to medical staff, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
Israel was the first to provide initial vaccinations a year ago and was one of the first to implement a booster programme after noticing that protection diminished over time.
Other countries, like the United States, have been carefully monitoring its booster programmes in order to determine whether to administer extra doses.
