Increased Vaccination Rates A Factor In Improving Covid Indicator Trends Says Hisham

All major Covid-19 indicators in the country have decreased, except for the surge of education clusters, according to Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

All major Covid-19 indicators in the country have decreased, except for the surge of education clusters, according to Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The director-general of health reported a decrease in new cases, fatalities, ventilator and intensive care unit usage, despite a slight rise in the country's infection rate.

All categories of clusters showed a downward trend, except for education clusters," he said in a statement on Monday (Dec 6).

He said that there was a 7.8 percent decrease in new cases for epidemiological week 48 compared to two weeks earlier, a 3.3 percent decrease in mortality, and an 11% decrease in ICU treatment.

A downward trend in ventilator use started 16 weeks ago while ICU treatment for Covid-19 has shown consecutive reductions.

“The reduction of both these indicators are in line with the increase in vaccinations," said Dr Noor Hisham.

He said that just 227 of the 5,969 clusters reported were still active at the time.

Additionally, he said that the spike in education clusters must not be taken lightly.

Non-adherence by individuals to existing standard operating procedures (SOP) can give rise to unwanted clusters.”

“Data shows that out of the 16 clusters involving educational institutions, 12 occurred in secondary schools and higher educational institutions," said Dr Noor Hisham.

While the majority of adolescents and adults are now fully vaccinated, he asked them to maintain the SOP.
