The alarming spread of the COVID-19 Omicron variant in the United Kingdom (UK) has led France to propose additional restrictions for travellers arriving from the nation.

Beginning from midnight Dec 18, all travellers from the UK above the age of 12 must have a compelling cause to travel, the French Foreign Affairs Ministry announced on Thursday, reported Xinhua. Regardless of vaccination status, this rule applies.

Travellers departing from the United Kingdom to France must display negative PCR or antigen test results generated less than 24 hours before departure. Furthermore, they must complete a passenger form.

Following their entry into France, UK travellers must self-isolate in an area of their selection, the ministry said. If a traveller can provide a negative PCR or antigen test 48 hours following arrival, they are exempted from quarantine.

According to the UK Health Security Agency, the Omicron variant has been found in over 10,000 people in the country.
