The world’s first case of ‘Florona’ infection, or a dual infection with Covid-19 and influenza, was recently identified in Israel, raising worries within the global health community due to the severe danger to the body’s immune system.

As reported by news18, Israel’s first Florona case was confirmed earlier this week in a pregnant lady brought to the Rabin Medical Centre for delivery. According to reports, the lady was not vaccinated.

The discovery of Florona disease comes at a time when the globe is experiencing an outbreak of Covid-19 cases caused by the Omicron variant. Recently, countries such as the United States, France, and the United Kingdom saw record-breaking rates of Covid-19 infection and hospitalisation as a result of the new variant’s dissemination.

Florona is not a novel Covid-19 variant but rather the result of a Coronavirus and influenza infection occurring concurrently. However, this disease can pose a serious health danger since, according to Dr Nahla Abdel Wahab of Cairo University Hospital, Florona might indicate a significant breakdown of the immune system due to the simultaneous entry of two viruses into the human body.

Additionally, after the discovery of Florona, Israel said that it is presently examining the new disease in light of the country’s current influenza outbreak. The government was one among the first in the world to vaccinate its people against Covid-19 and had just begun delivering fourth vaccine doses against the virus to those with a weakened immune system.
