EU Purchases 180 Million Vaccine Doses Modified For Omicron Variant
The European Union (EU) has purchased more than 180 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech Omicron variant vaccine, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Thursday.
Von der Leyen told the reporters that during a meeting of the European Council, EU leaders implemented terms in contracts with vaccine manufacturers that enable them to request the production of a modified vaccine within 100 days.
According to Anadolu Agency (AA), the EU’s pharmaceuticals regulator is evaluating the customised vaccination.

She highlighted that Europe is now capable of producing 300 million doses of vaccination every month.
The EU is the leading exporter of COVID-19 vaccinations, she continued, having sent more than one billion doses to the rest of the globe.
She also urged EU countries to accelerate vaccination operations in response to the Omicron variant.
Von der Leyen also addressed the validity duration of COVID-19 travel certificates, which have been the topic of recent EU debates.
Reiterating that a booster injection is required six months after complete vaccination, she said that the certificates would remain valid for an additional three months until the booster is administered.
