COVID Booster Doses For Adolescents Will Be Decided Soon Says CDC Chief

The approval of a third COVID-19 vaccination dose for children aged 12-15 in the United States might happen within days or weeks, the director of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said CNN on Wednesday.

When asked when that age group’s adolescents may get a booster dose, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky responded: “So the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is looking at that right now. Of course, the CDC will swiftly follow as soon as we hear from them, and I’m hoping to have that in the days to weeks ahead.

However, it was not immediately clear if Pfizer Inc (PFE.N) and its partner, BioNTech SE (22UAy.DE) – the only manufacturer with an authorised COVID-19 vaccination for children – had officially requested FDA clearance for a booster in adolescents aged 12-15.

Pfizer and the FDA representatives did not immediately answer a request for comment.

While authorities in the United States have said that vaccinations prevent serious infection and mortality from Omicron, some adolescents between the ages of 12 and 15 are now six months out from their first doses.

Children aged 5-12 in the United States were just authorised for the vaccine and have only lately begun receiving vaccinations.

No vaccination has been licensed for children under the age of five, which Walensky said she does not see changing anytime soon.

The companies and manufacturers are working toward data for children under 5. That will not be in the month ahead," she told CNN.

Pfizer said earlier this month that it was studying a three-dose strategy of its COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 2 to 16 after findings indicated that three doses conferred higher protection in adults over the age of 16.
