134 Covid Variants Of Concern Cases Detected Over Last 2 Weeks Says Health DG
From October 7 to 19, the Ministry of Health (MOH) identified 134 new cases containing variants of concern (VOC) of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, according to Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
He said that there were 132 Delta (B.1.617.2) variant cases and two Beta (B.1.351) variant cases, totaling 2,366 VOC cases throughout the country.
He said that the latest discovery brought the total number of cases for the Delta variant identified to 2,128 and the Beta variant to 224.
“Meanwhile, the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) identified 37 cases, 35 involving the Delta variant and two Beta variant cases," he said in a Facebook post.
According to Dr. Noor Hisham, the three states with the greatest number of new Delta variant cases were Johor (43), Negeri Sembilan (18), and Melaka (15).
He did, however, state that no new cases involving variants of interest (VOI) were discovered over the same time span.
The Alpha variant has been identified in 14 cases in Malaysia, whereas VOI cases include 13 cases of the Theta variant, four cases of the Kappa variant, and one case of the Eta variant (three cases).
